Yorleni Vásquez López: Even though the video is very simple, it clearly states the meaning and relevance of Call for education. According to Levy (1997, p.1), Computer Assisted Language Learning is the constant search for info and study of applications of the computer language teaching and learning (Levy, M. (1997) CALL: Context and conceptualization. Oxford: Oxford University Press). In relation to the video, CALL is not only a tool, but a new version or learning and teaching strategies, through the implementation of more interactive activities and classes to aim students’ motivation so they can improve and enrich their knowledge. For me, as a future teacher I would try to be always searching for new teaching strategies to keep my students motivated and to engage them into a more fun, interesting and interactive way of learning. Also, if possible (depending on the population I will teach), I will create a blog or a facebook group in which I’ll share information, homework, videos, practices, additional materials and the like for my students to visit it and to interact with each other, in order to provide and receive feedback and enhance their knowledge. Moreover, I will try to work with my coworkers as a team, so I can share with them all the activities and material I create or find useful for my students, so they can use it with theirs. The following link http://web.stanford.edu/~efs/callcc/callcc-intro.pdf contains a document with the principal foundations of CALL; in which, the author explains that due to this changing world dominated by technology, we and our students are requiring new knowledge and skills to retain language knowledge or skills longer; to make deeper associations and learn more reliable information and to enjoy the language learning process.
The video clearly shows how CALL is not only a tool that we should or not use when teaching, it (as simple and a little bit creepy as it is) states that Call is indeed the future and final result of many programs and theories to improve the process of teaching and learning within a classroom. We can see in the video how CALL is here to help humans having a better understanding of how technology is helpful when teaching, in fact, as seen in the video it looks like it is its mission to help. So we should not fear to improve and move to better techniques or being scared of technology, CALL is the future and is already here, and it´s our choice to accept it or not. In other words, we are the ones who decide whether or not keep using just books or move in and make a successful class.
I would like to highlight two phrases from this video that called my attention, “basically you are in charge of providing a stimulus to the human and they have to provide you a response”. This is CALL`s mission; Computer Assisted Language Learning is one of the main characters in the process of second language acquisition. Along with the teacher, CALL works as facilitator of a stimulus (modeling the language, encouraging participation and increasing learning motivation) and the learner who is the protagonist plays the task of using the stimulus to come out with language production and creativity. The following video provides examples of resources for CALL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-OOVYNbLzs
Based on the video, it is evident the importance of implementing diverse multimedia tools within the classroom as a way to motivate and engage both students and teachers in the teaching- learning process. It is clear how globalization is changing the world, new technology is used and applied in societies worldwide, so people have to live with this and update their knowledge about this new devises. As a result, teachers can’t let technology to take their places but they must know how to implement it in classes and use it as a source of knowledge and information during the learning process. CALL can be used as a tool to develop interactive classes with the students and teachers; to illustrate this, a blog or web page can be created, where students by using computers and internet can create an account and sign in to develop diverse tasks such as group discussions, presentations and tasks related to a specific topic, as a result, students are able to use this page or blog at home and interact during their free time. The following video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcVYM7y_1a4 mentions why it is important to implement technology in the classrooms, how to achieve this and the goals of using it as a way to succeed and improve the educational system.
