As we all know, technology is a fundamental aspect in our lives nowadays. Education is definitely not excluded of this phenomenon. As teachers, it is our responsibility to look for creative ways to implement technology in our classes. The majority of the students access to the Internet every day. Therefore, we have to find the way to use this tool in our classes taking into account our students’ interests and necessities. However, we have to be extremely careful when using technology. We have to be sure that it matches with our objectives. The idea is not only using technology but using it with clear educational purposes. The implementation of technology has to be done in an interactive way in which the students have enough opportunities to participate and learn by themselves. In my work, sometimes I include the use interactive boards when teaching. It is an excellent way to promote technology in my classes. It is an interactive way of learning in which they can acquire new knowledge or reinforce concepts, structures, vocabulary, among others. The use of blogs or online exercises is another strategy that is useful when teaching to complement the students’ learning and understanding. Link: https://www.llas.ac.uk/resources/gpg/61 This website gives a definition and a brief description of the history of CALL. It also shows some examples of CALL , for example, the use of multimedia and Web-based CALL. Finally, it contains some programs that we can include in our classes.
The material and information presented in this video is definitely important in the educational area. Teachers must know the reasons why CALL is important. As the video shows, one of its benefits is that it tries to make language learning funny for educators and learners. Moreover, the video reveals that good teachers use technology having a plan before; in other words, they do not use it just because it is in fashion. This is exactly what we have to do in order to help students; we need a plan with the activities that contribute to their learning process, in addition to the purposes and goals that we want our students to achieve. CALL is more than using a computer; it means planning a class taking advantage of the benefits that technology provides by considering students’ needs and accomplishments. Since CALL tends to provide stimulus looking for a response, it relates to our educational work because we need to give students the tools for them to create their own job; that is, a good teacher is not the one who makes everything in classrooms. A good teacher is someone who encourages students to analyze, solve problems and face situations; he/she is someone who creates a student-center classroom. Example: Teachers may use CALL to have students’ exposing their critical thoughts, through a chat and/or video, about a movie related to the topic that is being studied in class. Link: http://web.stanford.edu/~efs/callcc/callcc-intro.pdf In this link, you can find a complete history of CALL, how it was founded, its early projects, in addition to the significant role it plays in when acquiring the language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing). It also contains information about how CALL might be used in the future and its assessment.
Technology is a fundamental part of humans’ lives. Everywhere people are, technology is being used regardless age, nationality, culture, and so on. That’s the reason; teachers cannot put aside society demands and; most importantly, their students’ needs, from educational environment in order to prepare citizens able to respond to these social needs. Teachers must be innovative, creative, and a leader to guide students to learn or acquire knowledge by using technology. Therefore, teachers have to be able to manage different technological tools that could be useful for their students according to their needs and characteristics. Moreover, teachers should take advantage of technology as for teaching process as for innovate their own learning on what changes could improve the way in which they teach and promote students’ learning. For example, teachers could be trained on the use of CALL by taking courses and why not? Online courses or tutorial about how implement CALL in classrooms. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2N1I6sOhDiw
This video presented a vital aspect in the use of CALL or any technological devise that is the purpose or goal for its implementation and how it will be useful for the students. For that reason, as teachers we need to look for the option that best fits the purpose but at the same time it should be focus on the students’ abilities and necessities in order to be sure that it will produce a positive effect in their proficiency in the use of their English knowledge. As well, as teacher we need to try implementing dynamic activities for personal growth but we cannot forget that it is important to encourage the cooperative learning that is one of the principles of this tool, in which students share ideas and help each other while learning, and at the same time, improving the relationships within the classrooms. In my own experiences this type of technological tools is one of the best strategies to improve my knowledge and become a better professional. I want to share this link that shows general information about CALL in regards of what it is about, history and how it is important in the time we live, but I consider that more information needs to be added to develop CALL activities in the classrooms, activities such as hang outs, researches and team activities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6Ysad0ci6U
Computer Language Assisted Learning (CALL) can have a major impact in the learning of a Foreign Language. Teachers must be aware of that and to put it into practice. However, many teachers might be afraid of it because they don´t know how to do it. Others think that they are applying it just because they bring a video to the class. But the truth is that teachers don´t need to be that computer literate, of course some knowledge is needed, but not at an advance stage. What is really important is to have a reason for the technological devices and/or applications that are brought to the Foreign Language class, what do we expect our students to learn? What do we expect to stimulate through the use of CALL?. There are many reasons why is beneficial to incorporate CALL in the classrooms. Personally, I expect to use CALL in my future teaching to enhance the communications skills and to teach and raise sympathy towards the culture of the target language because CALL allows teacher to let the students interact with real life situations. The following link will take you to an article that has information on the history of CALL as well as the reasons why should be incorporated into classes and the main reasons why teachers don´t use it.
Since education has been experiencing many changes because of the expansion of new technologies, educators have to think in new ways of teaching considering innovative tools. CAll is one of those ways that educators can use, it is very useful and it has a lot of benefits when teaching a second language. When we as English teachers implement CALL in our classrooms we are making the learning of English interesting and fun for us and for the students. So, in this manner we can adjust students to the 21st century and change the traditional way of teaching into a more effective and enjoyable one. However, we have to be aware that Call is not to be master when using technology but being able to think in different techniques to improve the teaching practice and engage the students in the learning process. Using CALL is how methods and techniques interact with technology and we as teachers need to be careful with the use of the technological tools, we should think in how technology could be applied appropriately and successfully. In my case as a teacher, I implement CALL using video calls in Skype with my students to talk about different topics and to ask them to share opinions and ideas. In this way, we also practice what we have been studying in class. Also, I used to post videos, practices and online pages for my students to practice English. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6Ysad0ci6U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuEZn-OQKio
Obviously, most students are computer literary since they are growing up in technological era; thus, we as a teachers need to be technological literary too. Not only that, as the woman in the video says, computer literacy is not the main objective, but implementing technology requires carefully planning in order to have an effective lesson plan and keep the class in the right direction. Planning is essential because sometimes things do not work as we expected and we need to have a second plan. It is also useful to have our students trying different types of technologies so that we can distinguish what are the most effective for each specific group. Another important aspect when planning is that we can contextualize the resources we will use to our students. For example, It will be better for a group to learn “Places around Town” if we show them a video which have known places from their own town. For example, I created this poster about the place where I live to teach students the topic Places around Town. (http://fran124.edu.glogster.com/new-glog/)
Technology has changed society, as well as education systems. The problem is that many teachers forbid its use instead of incorporating it in the classroom, leaving aside that technology could be an important part of the education process, ignoring that we live in a globalized world that evolves every day and new technologies arise. That is why, it is no surprise that many of these technological advances or devices are not well implemented in the educational system. For this reason, CALL seems to be a great tool that might be used within the classroom, having shown positive and outstanding results while learning a second language through the employment of technology. For example, it is known that many students have computers, cell phones with cameras, voice recorder, and access to internet which are not being seized for reinforcing education as they could. Thus, in the future I plan to take advantage of this technological advances in order to avoid the traditional way in which students are frequently taught. Teachers must incorporate technology as much as they can since it is becoming a worldwide tool. However, teachers cannot only decide to include technology in the classroom. They need to plan carefully how to do it, based on the previous pedagogical knowledge. This link contains an article which shows some teachers’ perceptions toward the implementation of CALL in the classroom. This article as well reveals diverse aspects to consider when working on a technological setting. https://eprints.usq.edu.au/6887/1/Park_Son_IJPLv5n2_AV.pdf
Technology has evolved to become part of our lives, it is not an option to choose if we want to use it or not. As a result people have to know how to live with technology, if not they will be replaced by those who know. The same happens in education, teacher may know how to implement technology because students are always exposed to this phenomenon. Technology cannot take the place and responsibilities of the teacher but it is a wonderful tool to enhance students during the learning process. For that reason, CALL plays a vital role during the language learning process where teachers and students can use it as a source of information and interaction in order to improve and get all the benefits by the implementation of it. As teachers, we must be aware of the environment in our classroom and students’ needs, so it is the teachers’ responsibility know exactly when and how implement CALL in the classes. For example; the teacher can assign students to look information about a specific topic, later students visit a blog and present what they have found, students comment and share ideas, next class students and teacher can have a broader knowledge about the topic taking into account students’ opinions. The following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYowyQ-o4oQ goes to a video that exemplifies how a teacher uses CALL in her classroom in order to have more interactive classes and engage students during the process of learning.
