This video exposes the multiple reasons why we should start including CALL in our classrooms. As she said, the benefits are numerous, so I think we need to carefully analyze them in order to complement our classes with CALL use. Nowadays and due to the technological growth, a good teacher must be aware of the necessity to include, little by little, technology in learning processes. The idea is not to full the lesson plan with it, but to accompany our classes with the benefits it gives, having as the main goal the students’ acquisition of language skills. The idea of applying CALL focusing on different intelligences and students’ needs sounds fantastic because it is our responsibility to promote activities and practices that encourages the learners’ autonomy, motivation and authentic language. In spite of the difficulties that working with technology may represent, it is necessary to insert ourselves in this online world in order not to be replaced by the technological tools. Thus, it is teachers’ obligation to inform themselves and create a collaborative classroom between the conventional and the technological resources. Example: We can use CALL to create, download and/or upload different oral and/or written practices that adapt themselves to the different intelligences our students have. These practices may help to include all students in the second language learning process. Link: http://faculty.ksu.edu.sa/saad/Documents/CALL%20Advantages%20and%20disadvantages.pdf The link above exposes the advantages and disadvantages of using CALL in second language acquisition. I want to share this one in order for everybody to know both aspects: the good ones and the ones it would be useful to consider and try to change.
Technology offers a vast amount of sources educators can use in the teaching process. Regardless the time, topic, level, and other aspects, facilitators must take into account when teaching, technology provides a series of advantages that makes easier and reinforce the teaching-learning process, such accessibility, flexibility, and interaction. Internet, videos, pictures, e-mails, documents, games, social networks, among other tools represent an important complementary help for teachers, if their aim is to promote students’ real learning. When students use technology in classrooms, they are given with a key that allow them to access to an infinite world of opportunities for learning. However, due to the huge quantity of information students are exposed, teachers must be careful for avoiding that the teaching-learning process could be interrupted or diverted by aimless use of technological materials. For example, English teachers can reinforce knowledge and level of performance of the English language by using macro and micro skills through technological tools such as web sites, online games, videos, etc. The following link presents a document related to the advantages and apprehensions of using CALL in English lessons: http://home.iitk.ac.in/~trc/call.pdf
CALL is an important tool for students and teachers because it provides opportunities to be involved with technology and its advantages for the educational system. As well, for educators is vital to update their technological knowledge in order to be ready for the world changes and to grow as professionals. One important aspect from the video is that as teachers we need to be aware of the individual characteristics of our students as well as their needs and preferences. For that reason, CALL offers a variety of activities to involve every student in the class activities by the use of different leaning styles and in this way they will be motivated and engaged in their own process of learning a foreign language. In the future as teachers, I would like to make use of new technologies to empower my students with its use, but at the same time, I would like to implement videos, blogs, web pages and other sources in order to fit the technological requirements and to avoid the use of the typical way by empowering the students to take risk with its use.
In this 21st century, teachers must improve the traditional way in which we used to learn, for instance, Just being sitting in front of a board and listening to the teacher, then write down information on the notebook that only stays on the notebook. Students do not feel motivated when they know they have to study this way. On the other side, CALL can offer students an innovative way in which they can learn while they are having fun and also enrich their knowledge without even notice it. Time does not matter, CALL offers flexibility and it is very accesible, you only need internet connection, a computer, tablet or even your smartphone to have CALL interaction. I my case, I would like to apply CALL in all the possible ways. First reason because students really love to be connected all the time and I know that having interaction with different content, context and culture would be very attractive for them. The following document is talking about English Teachers' Barriers to the Use of Computer-assisted Language Learning in which we can analize from the two different perspectives CALL: http://iteslj.org/Articles/Lee-CALLbarriers.html
Using CALL in an EFL/ESL classroom setting has numeros benefits not only for the teachers, but for the learners. Eventhough not evry facilitator feels comfortable when using technological devices in the classroom, it is vital that little by little teachers start implementing these as any other instructional source. Many argue that a lesson is not enough to cover all objectives planned; thefore, teachnology seems to be delaying the teaching-learning process. From the video watched, one can easily agree with the speaker. She says that by implementing such technologies one can offer low stress learning scenarios. I agree with this since when one is able to lower students´affective filter, it is very easy to observe how the classroom enviroment changes, it becomes a welcoming place to learn. Empowering learners, I believe, should be one of the main concerns of education in the 21st century. The job market becomes more demanding as time passes. Students have to be prepared for what the world inheret is going to requiere from them in the short term. Fearing technology is what makes many fail when trying to implement these innovation into the classroom. Knowing CALL benefits may help educators realize of the importance of personalizing the teaching-learning task based on each student´s learning style, and needs. Through these, changes can be made. Highly beneficial instruction requieres "classroom supplemets". It is a matter of researching, trying and improving. The following video is a TEDx Talk. This is a speech about the importance of making equality of learning availble no matter who your students are. Bringing the best of learners´ potential through a blended learning enviromet where face to face instruction is combined with innovative technology. The speech mentions three main aspects that make the changes in education. These are: the budget schools count on, the intelligent adaptative learning, and shaping the future learning. The speaker talks about the importance of the journey students experience when learning without looking at their starting point. She suggets that we learn the learner as the learner learns to determine the next larning experience the child needs, so that the class is relevant. The speaker finishes her presentation with a quote I loved, it says, " If children do not learn the way we teach, we must teach the way they learn", Mead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0TbaHimigw
Nowadays technology is increasing more and more, and most of the students have internet and easy access to technology. I agree with the woman in the video with the fact that we as teachers should implement CALL in our classes in order to help our students develop or improve their use of technology. Personally, i think that it is more entertaining and calls more the atention of students, the use of technology, than just using a text book in class. In my work as a teacher i would like to implement CALL principles in order make the classes less borring and way more interactive, using smartboards, projectors, etc. The following youtube videos gives a clear explanation of what is CALL, it's advantages, it's disadvantages and also gives the reasons of why we should use CALL for second language learning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_yUdywpvyY
Yorleni Vásquez López: As she is explaining, CALL is an incredible useful tool to implement when teaching in the 21st Century, but it’s not everything! We must be skillful enough and well prepared teachers with a great love and vocation for teaching, to be able to successfully instruct and inspire our students to enjoy learning. We should create a balance between technology and our own contributions in the construction of the lesson plan. Using CALL to learn and to teach can allow the possibility to access a universe of limitless knowledge and boundless possibilities to learn and share with others. Knowing how to intelligibly use CALL (to teach and learn), we can adequate the contents to the different learning styles and intelligences of our students. As a teacher, it is transcendental to be aware of our students’ special needs and characteristics; therefore, personalizing and individualizing the contents to fit our students’ needs (curriculum accommodations, geographical and/or cultural characteristics, and socioeconomic conductions) is another benefit from implementing CALL into our classes. Also, it would help to empower our students, because if we use technology in our classes, our students can do researches; navigate to look for validated information and many other new strategies to increase their own intrinsic motivation and to produce authentic language learning, preparing them for better jobs, with no time boundaries. One tremendously useful site we all can use (as teachers or learners), and I would like to share with you is http://www.agendaweb.org/ because it is a webpage in which thousands of practices and exercises are located, and available to be used at any time. Some of the multiple uses that technology and CALL can bring us are (practices and exercises available on the net or programs for us to create them): multiple-choice & true/false quizzes, gap-filling exercise/cloze, matching, re-ordering/sequencing, crossword puzzles, games, writing & word-processing, web publishing, online communication (synchronous and asynchronous), etc. The following link describes a huge number of benefits to use CALL: http://www2.nkfust.edu.tw/~emchen/CALL/unit1.htm, such the use of online dictionaries, online encyclopedias, news/magazine sites, e-texts, web-quests, web publishing, blog, wiki, and applications designed to develop and facilitate language learning and instruction, such as CD-ROMs, word-processors (Word), presentation software (PowerPoint) and many others.
What I like the most from what the speaker of this video mentioned is that using CALL in the ESL classroom allows teachers to approach multiple intelligences within the classroom. We teachers must be aware that not all our students learn the same way. There are multiple ways to learn and that´s where the multiple intelligences theory was originated. Gardner proposed this theory by the year 1983 (For further reading on this visit: http://psychology.about.com/od/educationalpsychology/ss/multiple-intell.htm). He proposed that there are eight types of intelligences (For further reading visit: http://infed.org/mobi/howard-gardner-multiple-intelligences-and-education/) but let´s be honest, a teacher cannot work with all the intelligences in a single lesson; however, one can try to stimulate as much as possible. How can a teacher do it? By using CALL in the classroom. Let´s take as an example the English Literature classes in Experimental Bilingual High Schools in the Costa Rican context. Nowadays there are audio books with illustrations available for free. By bringing this types of books to the class, the teacher stimulate visual and musical students, besides, it will work with pronunciation. Later, the teacher can promote a group discussion through Google hangouts or Skype in order to recall relevant aspects from the book and ask about personal opinions, here he/ she will be working with verbal and interpersonal students as well as logical- mathematical since it is promoting critical thinking. Then he/she could ask the students to write a reflection about the book and post it in the wiki platform of the group, here the teacher will be stimulating intrapersonal, naturalistic and existential students. Finally, the teacher can assign a project of acting out the main events from the book and recording in video, to post it in YouTube or any other webpage suitable for the purpose and then, share it with the rest of the group by Facebook, Tweeter or any other social network. This is only an example on how to work with CALL in our context and stimulating multiple intelligences; however, there are more ways that teachers use, they only have to be willing to explore and use CALL.
We as English teachers have to adapt to the environment in class and since we are living in the 21th century, we cannot keep teaching using the traditional way as our teachers used to do. We have to change and use technology in our favor. This means that we get to use the different tools that students use for fun to teach them. It is important to highlight what this woman says “By including computer and other technology in the ESL classroom I am preparing my students for better jobs and for a better way of life” this means that we are going further than just teaching a subject in class, we are helping our students to be more prepare for getting a job and success in life. In my classes, I have my students practice by using the computer. We use a web page were there are a lot of practices on the topic and these practices are very interactive so that they do not get bored. The following link has more information about practices in the web and some other links of webpages where students can practice their skills. https://sites.google.com/a/isu.edu/esl-teaching-resources/call
After watching the entire video a couple of times (first time wasn´t paying the attention this video requires) I must say that I strongly agree with the use of CALL within the classroom as long as is possible. Why? Well, although there are many reason why we should start (as future professors) implementing this kind of “new-era-teaching” style that is using CALL, I would like to state just one reason that has been in my mind since I first read about this and which I consider to be more than enough reason to do it. And that is: CALL, used in the classroom, allows the teaching-learning process to be student-center. The whole CALL, as I feel it, is meant to help the student to learn and create his/her own knowledge by experimenting, trying, discovering and processing all this information by his own, and not only by memorizing what a professor says. Being the professor a guide and not someone who is supposed to know everything. CALL considers important this process of learning in which the student is what really matters.
